Entry Acceptance Rules

Number of Bottles Required Per Entry: 1

All entries will be picked up from drop-off locations the day of the drop-off deadline.

» One bottle per entry (750ml preferred)

» All entries must have labels attached.

Labels can be printed directly from this website. After completing your registration print the label and ATTACH TO BOTTLE with sticky tape. There is no need to cover the entire label - just so it is secure enough not to fall off.

All entries must be handcrafted products, containing ingredients available to the general public, and made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers (i.e., no use of commercial facilities or Brew on Premises operations, suppliers, etc.).

The competition organisers are not responsible for mis-categorised entries, mailed entries that are not received by the entry deadline, or entries that arrived damaged.

The competition organisers reserve the right to combine styles for judging and to restructure awards as needed depending upon the quantity and quality of entries.

Qualified judging of all entries is the primary goal of our event. Judges will evaluate and score each entry. The average of the scores will rank each entry in its category.

Brewers are limited to two entries in each category but may only enter each sub-category once. Group entries can only be entered once.

The competition committee reserves the right to combine categories based on number of entries. All possible effort will be made to combine similar styles. All brews in combined categories will be judged according to the style they were originally entered in.

Bottles will not be returned to entrants, though you may be able to collect them at the conclusion of all judging.

Packing and Shipping

Carefully pack your entries in a sturdy box. Line the inside of your carton with a plastic trash bag. Partition and pack each bottle with adequate packaging material. Please do not over pack!

Write clearly: Fragile. This Side Up. on the package. Please only use bubble wrap as your packing material.

Enclose each of your bottle labels in a small zip-top bag before attaching to their respective bottles. This way it makes it possible for the organizer to identify specifically which entry has broken if there is damage during shipment.

Every reasonable effort will be made to contact entrants whose bottles have broken to make arrangements for sending replacement bottles.

Awards

The awards ceremony will take place once judging is completed. This is anticipated to be on the day of judging - Saturday the 12th of August at around 3.15 pm.  Brewers with entries are strongly encouraged to participate as either stewards or judges on the day so that we can finish the judging on time. Experience is not necessary as you will be sitting with experienced people who can guide you through the process, but bring reading glasses as you will have to read Style Guides for your category so that you know the characteristics that you are looking for in each beer being judged.

Places will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each category and will receive a medal/token in recognition of their placing. Score sheets are also returned to entrants either on the day, or via email if entrants provide an email address. Entrants must be residents of Tasmania to win places or to qualify for the national competition. Note: only categories with a minimum of three (3) entries will qualify entrants to progress to the National competitions.

  • In the event of tied scores, placegetters will be decided by progressive countback as follows: a) highest score for Overall Impression; b) highest score for Flavour; c) lowest range of individual judge scores (smallest spread of scores across panel); d) the judging panel will be requested to resolve the tie.
  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placegetters in each TSHBC category qualify to enter a beer in the same category in the AABC

Champion Beer of Show will be awarded to the highest scoring beer in the competition. In the event of a tie, a progressive countback will be used as for category placings.

Champion Brewer and Best Region (North/South) will be determined by the sum of place points awarded: 1st: 3 points, 2nd: 2 points; 3rd: 1 point. For a group entry, all brewers listed will receive the same points but any prizes/trophies will only be given to the brewer who entered the beer.

Additional prizes may be awarded to those winners present at the awards ceremony at the discretion of the competition organizers.

Both score sheets and awards will be available for pick up that night after the ceremony concludes. Awards and score sheets not picked up will be mailed back to participants.
